Christmas can be a stressful time: you have to entertain the children, your mum, and your in-laws, do all the cooking, buy all the presents and after all that find some time to enjoy. Well unless you’re super man or woman, doing all of this is quite the task and relaxation is quite honestly out of the question. This is why January is the perfect time for a mini break, a weekend away or if you’re lucky enough to steal a week, then even better.
For me, there’s no better destination than Barcelona. This versatile city is perfect for any kind of holiday; whether you want a relaxing beach holiday, a sight seeing extravaganza, a cultural weekend or a party central bank holiday, Barcelona has it all. Or event better, mix them all together. But why January I hear you ask. Well, on the 16th of January, the Gracia district of the city celebrates its annual San Antoni festival.
This festival takes place in the trendiest area of the city, Gracia, on the 16th of January each year. Traditionally celebrated as an agricultural celebration when the area was a small village outside of the city, today San Antoni (the patron saint of Animals) is celebrated in true city style. Expect no less than the usual decorated streets, food and craft stalls, local performances and some spectacular bonfires and fireworks. Anything goes during this festival as it’s another Spanish excuse for a festival. So why not join in the fun and let your hair down for some post Christmas relaxation.
San Antoni being Spain’s patron saint of animals, you would naturally expect to see some animals during the festival; or at least the odd cat, dog or donkey right? Well, think again. The festival is more of a tribute to the saint and sees parades from people dressed up as devils, playing instruments such as drums and finally dancing around bonfires.
However, do not be mistaken that the festival will have you more tired than when you arrived as although the festival serves as an excuse for a good old party, Barcelona style, there is also the chance to sit and relax in one of the outside bars and try some of the areas specialities.
Why not just go for it and book your Barcelona accommodation (alojamiento Barcelona) now. Hotels in Barcelona (hotel Barcelona)don’t often disappoint although they do tend to get booked up quite quickly. Barcelona apartments (apartamentos en Barcelona) are another alternative and let you enjoy a home from home atmosphere in one of Europe’s most cultural centres. Enjoy!
