You can hunt for gemstones while strolling the beach, but if you love scuba diving then you should try hunting for gems on a dive. You will get an air tank to use on your dive.

When scuba diving, Minnesota waters can be colder than what you may be used to. The water may also be a bit more cloudy than you normally expect. It is advised to dive with a buddy and to stick to the sand bars where the agates are usually found.

Besides Lake Superior, you can also try your have scuba diving in Brainerd Lakes County. Here you will find a scenic area where mine pits have been converted into crystal lakes. These lakes are a favorite scuba diving spot. Minnesota locals and visitors to the area can have a wonderful time diving in these man made lakes.

Do not forget the general rules of scuba diving. You should never scuba dive alone. This is especially true in Minnesota waters where conditions can vary greatly from the tropical locations where most people scuba dive.

You also need to be careful about checking your equipment before each dive. You should always check to be sure everything is in proper working order. Make sure that your air tank is operating properly and that all your gear is free from damage.

When scuba diving in Minnesota you also need to become familiar with the water conditions. Minnesota water is much colder than water in other common scuba diving area. The waters may be cloudy and may not be as easy to navigate since you are not familiar with them. It is always smart to take a local diving course just so you can become familiar with the area before you dive.

Try out this new location for scuba diving. Minnesota may surprise you. It could end up being one of your favorite places to go diving. There is a lot of great scenery and plenty of amazing treasures to find in the waters of Minnesota.

Scuba Diving in Minnesota: What Opportunities Await

Millions of Americans schedule a Mexico vacation. If you are interested in scheduling a vacation in Mexico, or you already have, you may be wondering what you can do while on vacation. In Mexico, there are an unlimited number of activities that you may find exciting. One of those activities may include scuba diving.

When it comes to scuba diving in Mexico, there are many travelers who are misinformed. Many believe that you have to be an experienced diver to enjoy underwater diving. This is simply not true. Before going scuba diving in the ocean, it is advised that you have basic knowledge of diving and strong swimming skills. However, you do not have to be an experienced diver. When vacationing in Mexico, there are many individuals who go scuba diving for the first time.

Scuba diving is a pretty self-explained activity. Scuba divers are featured in many movies and can be found in many amusement parks. While the general idea of scuba diving is the same in Mexico, what you will see underwater is not. There are a number of underwater animals and plants that can only be seen in or around the Mexico area. This in itself is one of the many reasons why you should schedule a scuba diving adventure.

In Mexico, scuba divers are often able to swim with the dolphins and sea turtles. To many, this alone is worth the cost of scuba diving. Just a few of the many sea animals that you may see in Mexico include lobsters, eels, sting rays, and a large number of different kinds of fishes. The fishes found in underwater Mexico often include puffer fishes, spotted fishes, and parrot fishes.

While the sea animals found underwater are the most exciting part of scuba diving, there are other underwater activities that you can participate in. Many scuba divers enjoy diving along coral reefs that are found along the coast of Mexico. Coral reefs are not only home to a large number of sea animals, but they also make for great adventures. You may find it exciting traveling in, over, or around the many different sized reefs.

Unless you are an experienced underwater diver, you are advised to go scuba diving with a trained professional. These professionals are most commonly found with scuba diving tour groups. Scuba diving tour groups can be found all along the coast of Mexico. Scuba diving is a popular pastime in Mexico; therefore, you are encouraged to schedule your scuba diving adventures ahead of time.

In addition to scheduling a scuba dive with a trained diver, you can learn how to scuba dive at a number of locations in Mexico. Many of these locations also offer guided tours. Scuba diving lessons are offered as group lessons or private lessons. Private lessons may be more expensive, but many first time scuba divers find them rewarding, in more ways than one.

Underworld Scuba operates scuba diving and snorkeling tours in the Manzanillo area of Mexico. It has been said that the Manzanillo area is one of the best places to go scuba diving in Mexico. Underworld Scuba, along with number other companies, state that the area is thriving with underwater life and adventures. Another popular scuba diving tour company is The Puerto Dive Team, which operates out of Oaxaco Mexico. They are most known for their private one-on-one underwater tours.

To find other guided tours that are designed for scuba divers, you are encouraged to contact your local travel agent or do the research yourself. Whether or not you have already selected your Mexico destination, you should easily be able to find nearby tours. The closer you are to the coast, the more tours you will have access to. What you can do and see underwater is absolutely amazing. It is likely what you see will stay with you for years to come.

"The night before there seemed to be heavy rain and too much of the pollen were flushed in the water and were floating. So the visibility could be much better, i´ve missed the „crystal clear water. You have to know the Green Lake is famous for its clear water. The good thing for this day was the water level with 9,40m. Spring flowers, plants, benches, hiking trails were below the surface. And i have found out when its the best time during the two to three months "flood" to get in the water - i was to early in this season. Altough the water temperature was between 5 and 6 degrees Celcius i did two dives (85 and 96 minutes long) My face was well frozen, i can hardly speak afterwards. Scuba Diving While Vacationing In Mexico

My name is Alex and I run a busy dive shop and school in Clapham, South London called Diving Leisure London.

When I'm chatting to people about diving I get asked all sorts of questions  about the sport itself and also about UK diving.

I've decided to write a blog article to try to answer some of those questions.

Where do you dive?

I dive all over the world, The Red Sea, Malta, the Maldives, South Africa. I also dive regularly in the Uk in places like Plymouth, Falmouth, Portland, Scapa Flow as well as inland lakes and anywhere deep enough. You can learn to scuba dive anywhere there is water deep enough. Even as close as Heathrow... Scuba instruction in the UK is usually of a very high standard.

Why scuba dive in the UK?

Apart from exploring wrecks, collecting scallops for dinner and the many other underwater activities, UK diving also offers the opportunity to extend your social group and to have great weekends away where you can enjoy parts of our nation that you don't usually see.

What do you see?

Lots and lots and lots. Wrecks, including battleships, cargo vessels and submarines. Lots of marine life including, large crabs, dogfish, dolphins, seals etc, and some great underwater topography.

Isn't UK diving cold?

Yes water temperature in the UK is a bit cooler than other parts of the world, but that doesn't mean you can't dive in it. It's like presuming that you can't go out in the winter. As you would above water , when it's colder, you wrap up warmer. Drysuits are designed for keeping you warm whilst you scuba dive in cold water and give you the opportunity to dive year round. Scuba diving certification for using a drysuit is only two dives or one additional dive if you do your open water or advanced open water course in a drysuit.

Isn't it dangerous?

In short, no. Scuba diving is an extremely safe and safety conscious sport. When diving responsibly and within the limits you're trained problems are unlikely to occur. Even so, you are trained in how to deal with problems, however unlikely they may be.

Bare in mind that unless you've had a conversation with a professional diver, the stories you've heard are likely to have been dramatized to make them sound more exciting or death defying than they really were...

Isn't it really hard to control your buoyancy in a drysuit?

I was recently having a chat with I diver who wanted to dive in the UK, but only during the warmer months as he had been led to believe drysuit diving is really difficult. Initially it may be a learning curve, but with proper training, diving in a drysuit can be as much fun and as easy as diving in a wetsuit. Personally if I could I'd always dive in a drysuit...

Is it really worth me doing all these extra scuba courses?

Scuba certification in as many specialities as possible is of great benefit to your diving ability. Scuba training in additional areas helps you gain valuable expertise and to learn directly from a scuba diving instructor. Scuba diving instruction in areas such as wreck, deep, nitrox, peak performance buoyancy and drysuit are great if you're looking to make the most of UK diving. The rescue diver and divemaster courses are also great for gaining experience.

Where can I learn scuba in London?

Chances are wherever you live in London you'll be able to find a scuba training school within about 5 miles of where you live, or about half an hours journey time on public transport, all offering a wide range of scuba diving courses. Most offer scuba classes every week.

Diving Leisure London runs all it's classes in Battersea near to Clapham Junction train station and with Clapham Junction being a hub, it's quite easy to get to from most parts of London.

What is PADI scuba?

The Professional Association of Diving Instructors is known as PADI. PADI are the largest scuba diving training organization in the world, offering scuba diving classes for all levels of scuba diver.

What scuba diving course should I do?

Which scuba lessons to sign up for is going to depend on your level of training. If you haven't received any scuba diving training look into doing either a discover scuba diving course, or the open water diver course. A scuba instructor will be able to advise you in which scuba diving lessons to take, depending on what you are looking to get out of diving.

Scuba Diving in London and the UK

So, how do you obtain the scuba diving certification? The only way to receive this certification is by signing up with a scuba diving school which basis its curriculum with a recognized scuba training agency. Such scuba certification agencies regulate and represent diving professionals and operators whilst also promoting the sport and the marine environment.

On successful completing the training, you will be certified as a scuba diver. You will then receive a scuba diving license which will allow you to scuba dive with diver operators and rent scuba equipment.

Because there are many different scuba diving certification agencies around, it is worth to find out which ones are closer to your home. It is important to understand that the approach to scuba diving will vary for each agency. However most popular agencies will offer very similar training for recreational scuba and will recognize each others qualifications.

Some Agencies are global organizations such as PADI and NAUI and thus recognized worldwide whilst other agencies are closely related to their country of origin.

Scuba lessons - Theory

In the theory part, you will be learning scuba diving safety techniques and basic scuba concepts. You will likely watch videos introducing you to scuba and will be briefed on scuba safety practices. Within the theory lessons you will also get to learn the different scuba hand signals for use underwater communication.

Most important of all, you will be introduced to the different diving equipment that you are soon going to use. During this time you will also be reading text books and gaining an understanding of the relationship between depth and pressure. Knowledge of how to use the dive tables to plan a dive and assembling and maintaining your scuba equipment will also be provided within this part of your scuba diving lessons.

Scuba lessons - Confined Water training

The next part of your scuba lessons is the confined water training. Finally within this part of the scuba course, you will actually get your first experience to breathing underwater. These sessions will train you on how to use your equipment and practice your buoyancy and surfacing skills. There are many skills to practice and learn, so you will probably have several sessions to practice them out.

At the end of the theory and confined sessions, you will be required to pass a final exam to progress to the open water portion of the program.

Scuba diving lessons - Open Water training

The final portion is the open water training. Here you will get to test the skills learned from the previous confined water training sessions. You will here practice the scuba diving skills with your instructor until you are completely confident and can perform them with ease in a real diving situation.

During these scuba dives, you will be given an orientation to some of the local conditions and environment you will be diving in once you have completed the course. The good thing about it is that you will also get to check out the underwater scenery. Be ready to become addicted to diving. These skill evaluation tests are spread over approximately four different dives. Once your instructor is satisfied with your progress and have passed all the necessary tests, you will be certified as an official scuba diver.

Scuba diving does not come cheap. In fact it is quite an expensive adventure sport. You have to prepare yourself to invest scuba so before even starting you have to be sure that you are willing to make the commitment. However the experiences that scuba will give you are priceless.

You have to understand that the cost of scuba diving, are segmented into three parts. These are Scuba Diving lessons and scuba diving Certification Costs, scuba diving Equipment and the actual Dives.

To begin with, scuba diving lessons and an accredited scuba diving certification is required before exploring the underwater environment. Expect to pay around 0-0 for the course leading up to the scuba diving certification.

The bulk of your cost of scuba will however be spent on your scuba diving equipment. Be prepared to pay around ,400 to ,000. However if you expect to dive only few times a year, then maybe renting is the wiser choice for you to go. On the other hand if you plan to dive regularly, buying is the only option. Why? The main key to this piece of equipment is reliability. Therefore go for the best regulators out there. Don't skimp on this one, the last thing you want when diving is a regulator failing on you. A cost for a good regulator including the air hoses is around 0 to 0.

The next piece of equipment which is mandatory in scuba is the buoyancy compensator device commonly known as a BCD. This equipment is essential to regulate your buoyancy whilst underwater. Expect to pay around 0 for a good one.

Learning to scuba dive is easy and can be undertaken by anyone, young and old, who are willing and dedicated to learn and make the investment for this adventure sport. Today, training programs have made scuba diving accessible to anyone. Men, women, kids, elderly and even disabled alike have the opportunity to learn how to scuba dive.

However before you can start experiencing the excitement that scuba gives you, you will have to learn how to scuba dive through proper training. Unlike snorkeling you cannot just decide to buy or rent equipment and start to scuba dive. This is because scuba diving involves some risks therefore special training is required. Dive shops will not take you for scuba excursions unless you have proof that you have the necessary training and scuba diving certification.

So before anything else you have to first learn how to scuba through the proper training from a qualified diving instructor. However do not get overwhelmed, scuba is a safe and easy adventure sports. Basic skills can be learned in a three day course. You just need to go and enroll yourself at a scuba class.

Health Requirements to start scuba diving

Although Scuba diving is easy, it can be a strenuous physical activity. For this reason you should be physically prepared. Your overall health should be reasonably good, particularly you circulatory and respiratory systems. Ideally, you should talk to your doctor to give you the all clear to start scuba.

You should also be aware that certain, certifying agencies may also require a certificate of good health before you are able to start training. Physically you should be a reasonable proficient swimmer who is comfortable and relaxed in the water. However, the most important of all, even if you are the strongest swimmer out there, is that you are mentally prepared to learn how to scuba dive and posses a mature attitude in handling this adventure sports.

Scuba Certification

So the question is, why do you need to train through courses for scuba? You need to obtain a scuba diving certification. Well, the most important factor in scuba training is that the basic scuba diving lessons are intended to prepare you to scuba concepts and make you comfortable with the equipment you need. Equipment that you can rent the scuba equipment from the diving school. You will gain knowledge on the type of equipment you need at a later stage.

Getting Started

The first step in getting your scuba diving certification is to locate a dive shop in your area. Preferably visit more than one dive shop, to get a idea on what is on offer, maybe they may have some interesting course packages.

Once you have made your choice on your diving school, sign up for a beginner scuba diving class. At this point in time, you are not required to purchase any sort of diving equipment, as you can rent the scuba equipment from the diving school. You will gain knowledge on the type of equipment you need at a later stage.

Another way to learn how to scuba dive is to get a resort course. This is a short course which is only limited to shallow dives with your instructor, includes a short theory session with your instructor, and learning basic scuba diving skills in confined water. This type of course allows you to explore diving and is a great way to determine if scuba is for you without having to invest into the full cost of a certification.

Obtaining the full scuba diving certification is very similar to getting your driver's license. The courses are structured around theory and hands on basic scuba diving training in confined and later in open water.

If you're checking to see if it's legal, and how you plan to punish me, please allow me to explain. I'm a PADI Master Instructor of Scuba Diving, and I spend my working days teaching scuba in Thailand. One of the most rewarding experiences for my diving students' is shooting great photographs of aquatic marine life.

Making underwater photographs in Thailand has many advantages for divers searching for that 'perfect shot';

Clear blue water
Warm water averaging 28 degrees centigrade
Pristine Coral Reef formations
Established Diving Centers and Scuba Equipment Shops

 
The most popular tourist areas for scuba diving in Thailand are Pattaya, Phuket and Koh Samui. These resorts offer great fun and excitement for beginners and certified divers. Whether it's vibrant fish life, colourful corals or sunken ship wrecks, the camera won't stop clicking while you're scuba diving in Thailand. I've captured pictures of Seahorses and giant Gorgonian Sea Fans in Phuket, Black tip reef Sharks in Koh Samui, and World War 11 ship wrecks in Pattaya.

Todays modern camera equipment has changed the way that scuba divers 'shoot' fish underwater. The traditional film camera is still used by many diving professionals, but digital underwater cameras have made underwater photography both accessible and affordable to the majority of scuba divers. Learning to Scuba Dive is not difficult for most people who are comfortable in the water, but snapping great photos under water takes novices some time to learn. One of the most important attributes is good buoyancy control. Apart from all the obvious advantages that neutral, relaxed buoyancy has for scuba diving, if you're trying to compose that image of the tiny yellow blob, commonly known as a Frogfish, being able to hover almost motionless just centimetres away from your subject is what sets you apart from the norm. Also, as recreational scuba divers descend, water absorbs colour. Starting with Red, Orange and then Yellow, and as you dive deeper, you'll lose Green and Blue. Strobe lights help to restore some of the colour that's lost, which is how the professionals obtain fantastic vibrant colours from their images.

I fully appreciate that not every diver has a passion for taking pictures of the new world that they've discovered. Many divers are more fascinated by ship wrecks, perhaps diving deep or making dives using nitrox (an increased amount of oxygen) but most of my scuba buddies have admitted that they are very keen to share the wonders on the underwater world by shooting pictures of fish and other marine life. With modern technology as a friend, it's now possible to store and share underwater images with your family, friends and even the general public via social sites and the internet. The dive may have been the most amazing experience that you've had, but it's so much more powerful to share the adventures with those for whom it may not be possibly to try scuba diving. PADI scuba courses teach student divers how to capture and share underwater photographs, and the Digital Underwater Photography course is now available to all scuba divers from the age of ten.

Private scuba lessons are becoming more popular now, especially in Thailand. Taking a dive course with you own private scuba instructor offers exclusivity, the personal touch, and usually more flexibility. So to enrol in the shooting fish course, otherwise known as the PADI DUP (digital underwater photography) course, you do need to be a certified diver of at least ten years old. But be prepared for some underwater fun that diving in Pattaya has to offer. The coral reefs are shallower here than other dive sites in Thailand, and the other advantage is that scuba diving in Pattaya is available year round because the Gulf of Thailand tends to be sheltered from the southwest monsoons that arrive in Phuket from June until October. Pattaya is not a famous diving destination, but beginners and experienced divers will be rewarded with some of the best wreck diving in Thailand. So, clean up the lens, replace the batteries and make sure that you have a watertight seal, because when you dive in Pattaya the camera never lies. You really can see Turtles, Seahorses and Sharks, and the wreck dives will leave you breathless (pardon the pun) as you drift along US Landing Crafts from the Second World War that were intentionally sunk by the Thai Navy for the local Thai divers and tourists on a scuba diving holiday in Pattaya.

Shooting Fish While Scuba Diving In Thailand

Scuba Diving in Thailand has many rewards for Recreational Scuba Divers, and world class dive sites in Phuket and the Similan/Surin islands are recognised for their vibrant marine life, nutrient-rich coral reefs and clear blue, warm water. Adventurous tourists flocked to Thailand in search of palm fringed golden sand beaches, luxurious beachside accommodation, endless watersports and countless family activities, value for money that few tourists to Asia could resist. Late December 2004 saw an event that would scar the lives of so many people and my account of this tragedy is based on what happened on the Andaman Coast of Thailand, though I fully appreciate that other countries and continents were also affected.

In Thailand, more than 8,000 people were killed in the disaster, or have never been reunited with their families. This also included over 2,000 foreign tourists, most of which were taking holidays in and around Phuket. This southern province contributed approximately 40 percent of Thailand's annual tourism income. The Indian Ocean tsunami was triggered by an undersea earthquake off the Indonesian island of Sumatra, and as the huge waves of tumbling water struck the Andaman shores, Phuket and its surrounding regions suffered raw nature at its worst. Phuket Scuba Divers who were actually under water at the time, recall a surge of water that pushed and pulled with all its might. Dive Boats were smashed, snorkelers were dragged along the beaches, and sunbathers were completely overwhelmed by a wall of water crashing overhead.

As you may expect, tourism in this region suffered tremendously, and has not yet fully recovered. Scuba Divers in Thailand are trying other diving destinations and during the last five years,  Scuba Diving in Pattaya  has seen a positive increase in the number of divers making a trip to dive in the Gulf of Thailand. The Pattaya Scuba Diving community are united in their efforts to attract more tourists and also to satisfy its expanding number of residing expats. The islands near to Pattaya offer divers and snorkelers a mixture of shallow calm bays sheltered from the strong currents, to deep dives around World War II US Landing Crafts that have been intentionally sunk by the Thai Navy, creating artificial reefs. Most of the Pattaya Dive Sites can be reached by a dive boat withing two hours and there are many PADI Dive Centers that offer daily Scuba Courses for beginners, Fun Diving Daytrips for certified divers and Snorkeling Tours for a relaxing day out to the Pattaya Islands.

Information, tips and advice for Scuba Diving in Pattaya

Most of the Pattaya dive sites have year-round diving and a good variety of diverse dive sites. From shallow coral dives to wreck diving, deep diving and drift diving, there are numerous scuba activities that can entertain beginners and even the most experienced scuba divers. The Pattaya Near Islands include Koh Sak, Koh Larn and Koh Khrok. Koh Larn means "Coral Island" in Thai, and the Thai's feel that Koh Sak and Koh Khrok resemble a mortar and pestle, so they named them after the kitchen tools that they use to crush peppers. The Pattaya Far Islands include Koh Rin, Koh Man Wichai and Koh Phai. Because these island dive sites are around 15 km from Pattaya, they tend to be less crowded by dive boats and water sport activities. The boat trip takes about 90 minutes to get there, but the clearer visibility and the vibrant marine life makes these Pattaya dive sites worth the trip.

Pattaya 'near' islands;
Koh Sak - A sheltered, shallow bay, which makes this dive site ideal for beginners, novice divers, and snorkeling in Pattaya. The maximium depth is around 11 meters, with lots of hard coral formations providing a home to Rabbitfish, Butterflyfish, Octopus, Morays, Stingrays, Wrasse, Angelfish and Damselfish.
Koh Larn - The Golden Bay on the western side of Koh Larn provides a variety of dive sites for divers of all levels. With hard and soft corals extending to 20 meters, this dive site is best known for spotting Tawny Nurse Sharks and blue spotted Rays.
Koh Khrok - A finger shaped island that is suitable for drift diving. Maximum depth reaches around 12 meters, with an abundance of sea anemones, clown fish, nudibranchs, and turtles.

Pattaya 'far' islands;
Koh Rin - Koh Rin has many diving areas, including two small satelite islands called North Rock and South Rock. With an abundance of hard and soft corals, coral whips and feather stars, divers will not be disappointed with the aquatic creatures on view around these dive sites. The dive needn't be deep here to see nudibranchs, sharks, razorfish, pipefish and morays.
Koh Man Wichai - Dives around this dive site in Pattaya can stretch down to 25 meters. There are two main dive sites, one being the 'Wall Dive' and the other being the 'Fingers'. Both areas provide a variety of corals including staghorn coral table corals, and here's where you're most likely to see larger fish such as Baraccuda, while you're in Pattaya diving.
Koh Phai - The beaches of this island are restricted because it is controlled by the Royal Thai Navy. The south of the island provides the best diving, with the small sheltered bay offering ideal conditions for beginner divers and those refreshing their dive skills. Close to Koh Phai is the wreck of the HTMS Khram, a WW II landing craft that was sunk in 2003 to create an artificial reef and a dive site for wreck diving.

Information about Wreck Diving in Pattaya

HTMS Khram Wreck - Early in 2003, the Thai Navy sank a decommissioned U.S. Warship between Koh Phai and Koh Larn island approx 15 km from Pattaya. The ship lies in 30 meters of water in the Gulf of Thailand, and was intentionally sunk to provide a breeding ground for fish, and a wreck dive for scuba divers. The Thai Navy prepared the ship as a dive site, and it is free from arms, oil and most of the other hazards to divers. The large holes that were made in many areas allow penetration dives through the ships passages whilst remaining in natural daylight. The wreck dive is a scuba diving gift for fish lovers', with Baraccuda, Trevallys, Jacks, Fuseliers, Batfish, Turtles, Stonefish, Porcupinefish, Unicorn fish and Sharks to name just a few.
HTMS Kood Wreck - Thailand dive sites are diving gifts for all divers, but wreck diving in Pattaya is 'nautical' miles ahead ! In September 2006, the Royal Thai Navy sunk the HTMS Kood a short 45 minute boat trip from Pattaya Beach. The Kood World War II US landing craft, became the nearest wreck to Pattaya, available for recreational divers with a diving certification above entry level. A sister ship of the HTMS Khram, the Kood is another fine example of a thriving artificial reef offering another great dive site in Pattaya. Just to the northeast of Koh Sak, the bottom of the wreck lies at 30 meters and the top of the tower at 12m.
Hardeep Wreck - Originally an Indonesian-registered freighter, the Hardeep sank in 1943. More than sixty years of growth has seen the soft coral formations and tube sponge gardens firmly establish themselves, and the wreck provides a safe home for older and larger fish families. The fish life on the Hardeep Wreck includes Baraccuda, Angelfish, Jacks, Trevellys, Batfish and Butterflyfish. Laying on its starboard side in 27 meters of depth, the wreck is only 42 meters in length and contains some very large openings to allow divers a view of the engine room and crankshaft.
Bremen Wreck - The Bremen is an 88 metre long Thai cargo ship that sank in the 1930's following an engine room explosion. The wreck now lies on the sandy bottom in 22 meters between Sattahip and Koh Khram.
