Where Should I Go for Adventure Travel Vacations

When thinking of vacations, traditionally we think of fancy hotels, sandy beaches and filling up on too many alcoholic drinks. Or maybe we think of hi-rise buildings, expensive dining, Broadway Theater, and filling up on too many alcoholic drinks. Whatever the picture is, from a tropical Caribbean island getaway, to a cozy Bed + Breakfast near a secluded ski resort, in all likelihood, your vision does not include deep

Adventure travel vacations and overseas adventure tours are fairly new concepts to many people. The idea of a “hiking vacation”, for instance, one where you sleep in eco-lodges, or tents under the stars, where you travel on horseback, or on foot, and where you carry your daily food on your back, these are not the normal activities that come to mind when one thinks of going on vacation. More and more people, however, are slowly changing the notion of what a vacation can and cannot entail.

Overseas adventures are something everyone should experience at least once in a lifetime. There is so much to be said for getting away from the normal, from the mundane, from what you’re used to. Even just going on an adventure outdoors, whether it be as simple as camping out in the backyard, or going on a nature walk around your neighborhood, these easy activities offer us a chance to unwind, to relax, and to appreciate the world that both surrounds us and supports us.

Getting Away

Take this simple concept of enjoying nature and relaxing, or perhaps venting, or even “getting away” from the stresses of life, and expand it to include countless other activities, really anything you can imagine doing outdoors, and there you have one of the key dimension for the idea of adventure travel vacations and overseas adventure tours.

The concepts of traveling, of seeing new places, meeting new people, exploring other realities around the globe, these are concepts that have been around for centuries. But it hasn’t been until the past 20 years that the overseas adventure tours and adventure travel vacations in general have taken-off. Nowadays tour companies create packages for tours that were formally only appropriate for the native intrepid backpacker. Eco tourism has shown itself to be more dynamic at times then the environment, incorporating new and exciting ways of manipulating the tradition hiking vacation.

The Future

And some may ask, “Is this a good thing?”. What about the environment? For that, we’ll have to wait another 20 years and see how both legitimate and “so-called” eco tour operators pan-out.

Adventure Travel for the Free-Spirited Individual

Adventure tourism is now one of the fastest growing trends in travel business. It started with Leo Le Bon who co-founded the world's first adventure travel company—Mountain Tours with other eight travel mates. Le Bon and others made the first commercial journey to the Annapurna region of Nepal. Since then, the travel business grew rapidly resulting to a plethora of travel companies that offer adventure vacations.

Classifying an adventure travel however pose a little difficulty in defining what exactly it means. Adventure travel depends on the level of strenuousness of activities involved. Adventure may involve leisure biking and hiking for some travelers or it may entail base jumping into an underground cave in Mexico.

Nevertheless, a travel involves some fundamental aspects to be classified as adventure. Adventure travel typically includes going to far-flung areas, intermingling with various cultures, and doing a physical activity.

Two categories of adventure travel are hard and soft adventures. Hard adventures fall under extreme and mostly dangerous sporting activity. Examples of hard adventures are rock climbing, surfing, paragliding, and scuba diving in remote locations. Soft adventures, on the other hand, are leisure activities that are often educational. It does not involve strenuous activity unlike hard adventures. Bird watching, religious pilgrimages and architectural tours fall under soft adventures.

But you might wonder who usually embark on an adventure travel? Travel Industry Association of America's (TIA) study indicated an estimated 20 percent of adult travelers are adventure tourists. It is also parallel to The Wall Street Journal reporting in 2003 that revenues from adventure tourism has skyrocketed topping the adventure market with 5 million dollars.

While many studies say college-educated males in their 20s typically embark on hard adventures, it is harder to categorize people who go for soft adventures. They say baby boomers and seniors significantly affect the rise of number of soft travelers. However, adventure-seeking women have also substantially caused the continuous growing of the industry. For example, divorcees ages 40 and 60 usually turn to adventure travel as a shift into new lives.

In addition, adventure travels are physically and psychologically beneficial both men and women. Physical challenges like mountain climbing require both physical fitness and focus. It develops muscles as well as serves as an excellent mental workout. Achieving difficult tasks also help build self-esteem especially for people in midlife crisis.

There are several options to what kind of adventure travel fits a specific type of person. But you should determine first how adventurous you would like to be. A travel agency may actually help steer you through the multitude choices that you will face.

Sports-themed vacations are well-liked for athletes. Examples of these are baseball fantasy camps and NASCAR driving schools. Safari is one example of soft adventures popular to many of varying ages. This may involve driving and walking through the African plains and come into close contact with lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo.

Longtime popular destinations are the Seven Wonders of World that include biking and hiking to these locales. Some of the world wonders include pyramids of Egypt, expedition to Antarctica, cultural tour in Japan and Ethiopia, the Great Wall of China, and Taj Mahal in India.

If you opt to have an adventure travel however, be sure to be safe as much as possible. Take note that adventure travel has inherent danger involved.

Adventure Travel In Russia

Russia used to be a mysterious country that few international travelers will go for vacations. Today, it is open to everyone and its tour industry is seeing an upward trend. It has so much to offer regardless you are interested in taking an historical trip around its imperial past or you want to do something a little more adventurous.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union more than a decade ago, more and more foreigners are traveling to Russia now for business and leisure. However, it can still be a difficult place if you are unable to speak their language. Fortunately, you will find that the Russians are incredibly warm and inviting hosts most of the time. If you are looking for some where that takes you away from the normal holiday routes then you should consider Russia as one of your must visit place.

So what kind of Russia adventure travel can a person expect to be able to do when visiting this unique country? Let us take a look at a couple of adventurous types of travel that you can do in Russia.

1. Trans Siberian Railway

The Trans-Siberian Railway or Trans-Siberian Railroad is a network of railways connecting Moscow and European Russia with the Russian Far East provinces, Mongolia, China and the Sea of Japan. During this journey, you will travel from Vladivostok Moscow to the wilds of Khabarovsk in the heart of Mongolia.

You will also get to visit Lake Baikal and the snowcapped mountains of the Urals.

This journey is a total of 6,135 miles in distance and you will pass through 8 different time zones during the journey. The trains are very comfortable, but it is the beauty of the country as you pass through the various areas that really gets an adventurer excited!

However, if you think this a bit staid for an adventurous journey in Russia, you could try the following instead.

2. Journey to the North Pole

With this type of adventure travel, you are given a chance to add your name to the very small list of people who have already made this epic journey in the past. This is certainly the more challenging of any types of adventure travel that you may find, but it will be worth it when you reach the top of the world. When traveling through the Arctic you will notice that everything seems bigger, the icebergs are massive and the horizon just seems to go on forever.

You will board an icebreaker at Murmansk, Russia and sail into the Barents Sea before breaking into the dense Arctic ice. You will experience an ever-changing panorama of wind-polished ice up to five meters thick and enjoy the immense polar landscapes from the Bridge or deck of the ship. And along the way, you can expect to encounter a variety of Arctic wildlife such as polar bears and walrus.

Certainly many people have found this particular adventure travel to be a very humbling experience and have put life into proper perspective for them.

As you can see, Russia has so much more to offer the adventurous traveler than just visiting the many historical cities. You will likely find yourself back to Russia for adventure travel and other amazing journey over and over again.
